Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, or BRA Day, occurs annually in October and is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction.
The second annual BRA Day will take place on October 16, 2013 and this year's theme is the "Team Approach" to breast cancer care, emphasizing the need for all breast cancer care physicians to work together to provide the patient with best treatment plan.
Singer/songwriter Jewel is the national spokesperson for BRA Day USA and has written a song, "Flower," to benefit breast reconstruction patients. All song proceeds go to the Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund of the Plastic Surgery Foundation to support breast reconstruction research and patient care.
BRA Day USA is a collaborative effort between the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, The Plastic Surgery Foundation, plastic surgeons, breast centers, nurse navigators, corporate sponsors and breast cancer support groups. These and other organizations, breast cancer patients, their families and friends coordinate events on BRA Day USA that include gala fundraisers, question and answer sessions, lectures, flash mobs, advertising campaigns and community events.
